Rhode Island has a long tradition of fishing.  It began with the first settlers to the region, fishing for the cod and striped bass that were so plentiful along the shores of Narragansett Bay.  Fishing vessels from European countries would travel to the new world, catch all they could, then dray and salt the fish before returning to their country to sell their catch.   Newport was RI’s first great seaport, though it was trading port rather than a fishing port and the birthplace of the US Navy. 

Point Judith was a dangerous place to navigate past and in 1806 a wooden lighthouse was first constructed there.  Point Judith Salt Pond was dredged and a breakwall constructed around the entrance to the harbor, keeping heavy seas from entering the Galilee breachway channel.  Then the construction of state docks and dredging of the channel opened the port up to large fishing vessels and Galilee became one of the largest fishing ports on the east coast, landing more than 11 million pounds of fish annually.
